My Mother’s Family Tree (McCormick’s)

My grandfather on my mothers side was called Alexander McCormick.  I never met Alexander or his brothers and sisters.

One day while I was on the ancestry site I came across a man called Jim Scott. Jim had information about the McCormick’s on his family tree. After discussing the family through messages it came to light that Jim was related to the McCormick family through his uncles. Jim’s two uncles had married McCormick sisters. Alexander’s sisters.

Here is what I have found out about Alexander and his family. They were all belonged to the Presbyterian church. All of the family came from a protestant background. My grandfather and his youngest sister Annie Margaret married Catholics.

Thomas McCormick was Alexander’s father he was born about 1857.

Thomas and Catherine ‘Kitty’ McConaghy married on August 26, 1879, Antrim, Northern Ireland. They had seven children,  Mary Teresa, Elizabeth, Catherine Jane (Cassie), John, Alexander, George and Annie Margaret (Maggie).

Thomas McCormick died on October 28, 1902, in Antrim, Northern Ireland, at the age of 45.

Catherine ‘Kitty’ McConaghy  died on August 9, 1919, in Ballycastle, Antrim, Northern Ireland, at the age of 63.

Children of Thomas and Catherine

Mary Teresa McCormick was born on July 8, 1880. She married William James Morgan on November 24, 1904, in Ballymoney, Antrim, Northern Ireland. She had three children by the time she was 28. She died as a young mother on November 1, 1910, in Ballymoney, Antrim, Northern Ireland, at the age of 30.

Her children were: Mary Ellen “Nellie” Thomas Tom and John. When Mary died her mother Catherine looked after and bought up her three grandchildren as well as her own children. She was also a widower at this time.

Mary Ellen ‘Nellie’ Morgan was born on August 15, 1905, in Ballycastle, Antrim, Northern Ireland.She married William James McAllister who was a catholic on November 27, 1929, in Cushendall, Antrim, Northern Ireland. They had 10 children during their marriage. She died on June 23, 1988, in Cushendall, Antrim, Northern Ireland, at the age of 82, and was buried in Waterfoot, Antrim, Northern Ireland.

Thomas ‘Tom’ Morgan

When Thomas ‘Tom’ Morgan was born on June 7, 1907, in Ballycastle, Antrim, He married Winifred Mary Geddes on June 12, 1943, in Brisbane, Queensland.They had four children in 13 years. He died on March 13, 1961, in Brisbane, Queensland, at the age of 53.

John Morgan was born on April 22, 1909, his father, He died about 1968, in Armoy, Antrim, Northern Ireland, at the age of 59.

Elizabeth McCormick was born on June 1, 1882, in Antrim, Northern Ireland, her father, She married John Alexander ‘Jack’ McHattie on December 15, 1904. They had six children in 13 years. She died on December 21, 1971, in Saskatchewan, at the age of 89, and was buried in Govan, Saskatchewan.

Catherine Jane (Cassie) McCormick was born on July 8, 1884, in Antrim, She married Joseph Henry Morgan on January 5, 1909, in Ballycastle, Antrim, Northern Ireland.

She went to Scotland and as per census of 1911 lived here:  96 Bouverie Terrace, Port Glasgow, Renfrewshire, Scotland. Her husband Joseph Morgan 23 was a canvas cutter in a rope-canvas works; their daughter Cassie 1, was born Port Glasgow; and her brother Alexander McCormick who was 19 was a general labourer in rope works and also lived with them.
Then  09 Dec 1912 heading for St. John, New Brunswick, Canada,Cassie with her two children and brother George McCormick on the SS Empress of Britain all on their way to Winnipeg, Manitoba. All on same ticket. Cassie died in Winnipeg.

 John McCormick was born on February 11, 1887, Antrim, Northern Ireland, He lived in Govan, Saskatchewan in 1915.

On 22 Jul 1911 he left Ireland aboard the CPR Lake Champlain from Belfast to Quebec, Canada to live with his sister.

Alexander McCormick was born on September 5, 1889, in  Antrim, Northern Ireland, He married Margaret May McNaul on February 11, 1918, in Ballycastle, Antrim, Northern Ireland. They had 10 children during their marriage. He died on February 27, 1966, in Ballycastle, Antrim, Northern Ireland, at the age of 76, and was buried there.

He also lived in Port Glasgow and worked there with his brother in Law. He also went to England and stayed and lived in Coventry were he was joined by his sons, Patrick and Thomas and also his daughter my mother Margaret. He later returned to Ireland.

Annie Margaret (Maggie) McCormick was born on June 19, 1895, in Antrim, Northern She married James Gallagher on September 10, 1919, in Ballycastle, Antrim, Northern Ireland.

When Maggie’s mother Catherine died there was only herself, her brother Alexander and her sister in law Margaret May McNaul left in Ireland. Maggie was present when her mother died at the age of 61.
I have left out George McCormick because George served in the first world war and to pay tribute to him, I am writing a piece just for him.
Thanks to Jim Scott, as he has done alot of the ground work here, he really helped me to learn all about how to search for your family and I must admit I have enjoyed it greatly. I hope my mothers family will learn lots about their family I know i have. Next up Corporal George McCormick.
