Remembering people through their words and pictures is something that I am currently doing. After people die many of their possessions either go to family members or, are taken to charity shops or end up on websites for sale. This is where I found these lovely postcards that Clara wrote and wanted to share her words and for her to be remembered
The interesting thing about postcards is that not only were they sent to people in other towns, but they were also sent from one person to another in the same town. It was a quick and cheap way of communicating to people, like for instance “I will be at yours on Wednesday after 8, looking forward to seeing you then.”
Clara Nell Sear Reader sent 3 postcards to the Goodacre family that worked and lived in Loughborough and Willoughby On The Wolds. The first postcard I will write about is the one that was sent from Loughborough to Loughborough from Clara To Mary.
Here is what Clara wrote: Miss M Goodacre, C/O Miss Toone, Leicester Road, Loughborough
As Flossie is going away early on sat morning I shall be with her until meeting you on Friday evening, so shall not bring the cycle with me. That of happens you would like it. We must walk up Beacon Road for it if we are able to do so from your home on Wed. We shall not attempt to cycle as the weather is so uncertain, but shall be taken in the case if the weather is good
With Love From Clara
Clara at the time of writing the postcard lived at 40 beacon Road in Loughborough with her family. Her friend Mary lived at 16 Leicester Road in Loughborough. She worked there as a servant for many years for the Toone family. Mr Toone was a solicitor in Loughboorugh.
As I write postcards two and three will come to know Clara better, we know that she likes to cycle and see her friends.
I will leave this for now, so please continue to read the next two postcards to find out more about her.
