This postcard was written in pencil by a gentleman called Georgie. It is addressed to his mother and father, it was quite hard to read so apologies as there are some words missing, but what I could read did confirm his enrolment in the army. The picture of the card is as stated on the card ” General View Of Crystal Palace and Canadian Building”
The card reads:
Dear Mother + Dad
Not certain whether I am in. Only just finished in Sept. Had a busy (illegible) I am alright quite happy. Remember me to (illegible)
Georgie
On research of Georgie I found the following.
Georgie’s full name is Ernest George Campbell Howe he was born on the 24th December 1897. His parents were :
George Howe born 23rd December 1875 in Colchester and Elizabeth Alice Andrews born 16th July 1873 in Bury St Edmunds. The 16th of July is my birthdate as well.
Georgie enrolled in the army on the 17th Oct 1917, which is the same date as the postcard, the postcard was sent from Norwood in London. He served in Ireland at C/o CPO Queenstown Co Cork
In 1918 his occupation is turning and milling on a machine. His favorite sweets were Panegoric or more commonly know as Army and Navy as the service people in the war like to eat them
He married a lady called Ida Gladys Cole and they had one daughter Sheila May Howe who was born in April 1930 and sadly died in 1931.
In 1939 he is living at 83 Ruston House with his wife Ida. Georgie’s occupation is a Club Valet
George died in April 1973 and Ida Died in October 1974
They are buried together at Diss Cemetery, Eye Suffolk
I hope that you and Ida and your daughter Sheila are happy to know that I researched you all and most of all remembered you all. I was unsure at first after seeing the postcard whether I would find much information about you and your family, thankfully I did.
God bless xx
